A quick trip to the minute clinic at Target confirmed our suspicions, Adam has strep. The penicillin prescribed to treat this infection put us back a whopping $1.30. Let’s just hope it works.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is the causative agent in Group A streptococcal infections, including streptococcal pharyngitis ("strep throat" AmE), acute rheumatic fever, scarlet fever, acute glomerulonephritis and necrotizing fasciitis.
If strep throat is not treated, it can develop into rheumatic fever, a disease that affects the joints and heart valves, and necessitated Grandma Lavonna’s heart valve replacement surgery. It saddens me to know that the majority of her heart problems could have been prevented by the most basic of antibiotics, penicillin.
