During this same time, Nana's health was failing. Coincidentally, or maybe not, she mailed us a generous gift of money with a note "there was a little left over", that just happened to be the amount required for the trip. Adam called to thank Nana for the gift, and explained that we would be using the money for a family vacation to Holden Village in August. Nana would be pleased to know that the experience was one of spiritual growth and renewal for our family. Poetically, it is a hummingbird that welcomes visitors to the Holden Village homepage. Thanks again, Nana, for your generous gift.

The transportation: a souped up Glenn's charter bus, complete with WiFi, electrical outlets, group movie screens, and a restroom.
Building bridges on Daddy's new smart phone. We also spent countless hours playing iPod touch, iPad, watching movies (notably, Wallace and Gromit, Little House on the Prairie, Singing in the Rain, The Sound of Music, Big Fat Liar, Cars, and Funny Girl), building a Lego Star Wars star ship, reading books, reading our fortunes, snacking, eating, and napping (not necessarily in that order!). After every stop Pastor Ed would call a number from the bus wheel and award prizes to the lucky child and adult winners. He would then read a chapter from "Giants in the Earth" by O.E. Rolvaag, a subtle reminder that traversing the country in a charter bus with 35 people is a whole lot easier than the homesteaders' journey in a covered wagon.

We arrived home at 1:00am on Sunday morning August 7 to a note from B.J. Deering that read, "Thanks for letting me stay here for the week. Just wanted to let you know that the cats have been either getting sick or going to the bathroom on the floor the past couple of days. I thought it had stopped yesterday but there were some new spots when I woke up this morning. I cleaned them all with soap and water. Hope you had a fun trip."
Adam proceeded to pull another bender, triaging a weeks worth of carpet stains until 4:30am with Spot Shot and Resolve carpet cleaner.
