Progress Report

Collin's first grade progress report arrived smashed in his backpack this afternoon. We took it out to read:

Collin-January Comments (provided by Mrs. Amy Blackwood)

Reading: Collin is reading at level 8 of our DRA reading assessment. This is right where we like first graders to be at this time of year. The skill I'm working on with Collin is retelling story events in order. The strategy that will help him is Check for Understanding. At the bottom of each page he should stop and tell who that page was about and what was happening on that page. If he does this, by the end of the story he will have an easier time remembering details.

Writing: In first grade the students are working on small moment stories. A small moment is something that has really happened. It is a writing piece in which rather than writing about a whole day's events, students write about just a small part of that day. They write about it with great detail, stretching their story over several pages. Collin is working on using periods at the ends of his sentence and using capital letters appropriately. I would also like him to add more details to his writing.

Math: We are working on unit 5 in math. We are working on solving more than and less than problems. Students will explore place value and continue work with math facts. Collin is very good at math. One think to work on is to look carefully at symbols when doing math problems. Practice telling time to the quarter hour to be ready for our next unit. Great work Collin!

Behavior: Collin is a great kid! He is polite. Collin focuses on his work.

***At his conference on March 20, Mrs. Blackwood also provided us with an update on Collin's reading. He has progressed to level 12 and is now "working on talking about favorite part of story and why he likes it, and making a connection." To celebrate his accomplishment we purchased "I Can Draw Animals" by Usborne Playtime from the book fair.
