Grace

It wasn’t our banner night as parents…or, then again…maybe it was…

Our plan was to light the cake Collin chose for his birthday, angel food with whipped topping and strawberries, and sing Happy Birthday after dinner, before baths and a promised family Wii Super Mario Brothers session. However, since all the boys are still re-adjusting to real life after a week in paradise, this plan was derailed by endless hysterical crying and back talk. In their defense, the boys are exhausted…but so are we.

So…instead of cake and Wii, the boys got a yelling Daddy, bed, and books. They were devastated…so much so that we were continually returning to their room before going to bed ourselves, to comfort them in restless sleep amidst pouting cries of "no...No...NO!"

It became apparent it was going to be a very long night if we didn’t re-evaluate our strategy, so at 11:oo pm, we got out of bed with Collin and celebrated his birthday, trick candle and all.

He was relieved to be back in our good graces…and we were grateful for the sleep. Sometimes what we all need the most is just one more chance to get it right.
