Moving In

An unfortunate hinge placement miscalculation, followed by the realization that the brand spanking new solid core door ordered from the Home Depot was incorrectly sized, prompted us to call for reinforcements. What we thought was going to be a quick and dirty encounter with Andre’s table saw turned into 6 hours of tinkering. We had the sickening feeling after he left at 4:00 that we had actually lost ground with our door issues (yes, plural, since we had also asked Andre to “fix” both the bi-fold closet and south facing guest bedroom doors that haven’t functioned properly since the contractors left in 2005). I guess it always has to get worse before it gets better.

In spite of all the setbacks, we told the boys they could finally, after months of anticipation and preparation, spend the night in their new room. Snuggled into the bunk beds Ellen and I slept in as kids, the boys fell asleep watching the lava lamp I received from Reid in college. Yellow lava peacefully bubbles in blue water in the middle of their new dresser, which the boys helped me assemble on Friday afternoon while Adam was at work. Next to it is a floor lamp with 5 brightly colored globes. The boys are ecstatic about their decor.

Both boys slept peacefully through the night, which is not always the norm. Chasing neighborhood kids around the Deerings backyard at Andy’s high school graduation party yesterday afternoon was likely a contributing factor. Collin actually beat Aaron upstairs, arriving at the side of our bed at 6:30 to snuggle. Aaron woke around 7, which is the latest he’s slept in months. I’m hoping that once we get the lighting optimized with the new shades, both boys will have no trouble routinely sleeping until at least 7.
