July 31, 2010-Day 1
6:20 am-Our "bags are packed and we're ready to go..." to drop the Blazer at Park-N-Fly.
6:30 am-Aaron, "Are we there yet?"
7:15 am (exactly one hour before our scheduled flight to Denver)-After hauling 2 check-in bags, 3 carry-ons and 3 car seats (oh...and 3 kids) from Park-N-Fly drop off to Frontier check-in counter we learn Aaron was onto something with his question. Unbeknownst to us (since Travelocity failed to send an itinerary change and Frontier failed to mention the scheduling change during Adam's confirmation call yesterday), our 8:15 am flight was changed to 6:30 am.
10:00 am-Beth has nearly exhausted entire repertoire of travel distractions (Pop-tarts, Pirate sticker book) while Adam continues to negotiate with attendants at Frontier check-in, who are now issuing us paper tickets on a series of American Airlines flights in a desperate attempt to get us out of Minneapolis today.
10:15 am-Check-in at American Airlines and learn that Frontier has issued 2 paper tickets for Collin Beduhn...and none for Aaron Beduhn. This is A-team work at it's finest.
10:30 am-Adam back to Frontier check-in counter for re-issuing of tickets, while Beth stays at American Airlines check-in counter. Collin and Aaron run between parents, while Nolan reluctantly sits buckled into his car seat, contained.
11:00 am-Breakfast/lunch at Subway
2:20 pm-Boarding American Airlines flight to Chicago (yes, we're going the wrong way!) Empty window seat next to Mom proves to be a lifesaver.
Hang out in O'Hare, watching Fireman Sam behind a jewelry shop with an extremely friendly new girlfriend from Asia who can't speak English, but is happy to have something to do while sharing our charging receptacle.
5:30 pm - Boarding American Airlines flight to Salt Lake City. Near the end of this flight, pilot announces we are flying over Denver...finally! Fortunately, Nolan decides to sleep for entire duration of the flight. Unfortunately, Collin and Aaron fall asleep as we are in final approach, making de-planing that much more enjoyable.
9:30 pm (10:30 pm body time)- After de-planing in SLC on our way to baggage claim Collin declares, "You have to be kidding me, somebody put me to bed!"
10:15 pm- Meet another Aaron at the Enterprise kiosk, who kindly upgrades our economy rental car to a full-size (for a nominal fee) after hearing our story.
10:45 pm- In rental car, finally on our way to ID, Collin says to Adam, "I know you'll probably say "NO", but will you please tell me a story?"
11:45 pm- While playing a rousing game of "name that song/artist" with the seek button on the car radio, Beth hears "I Saw Him Standing There"...which reminds her of dance routines on flatbeds with childhood best friend, Anne Luecke, who just happens to be celebrating her birthday today. The universe continues to send reminders via joyous memories.
sometime around midnight- We finally cross into Idaho, after starting in Minnesota with a short stop in Illinois, followed by Utah. Four states in one day with three small childrean...impressive.
1:30 am (2:30 am body time)- In spite of the fact that we were feeling like rock stars (which may have had something to do with the beverages we were consuming with the same name to stay alive, alert, awake and enthusiastic), we decide to call it a night at the Wingate just outside Twin Falls, ID. Ahh, Twin...home of the Valley House LHBC Servant Event and cliff jumping at Dierkes...more fun memories.
Seriously...only 1.5 hours to go in the morning before finally arriving at our destination. It's now confirmed...we could have driven in the same amount of time it took us to fly.
