Big Boy Bed

It was a good thing I didn't have a lot of time to think about it, because I'm not sure I was really ready to disassemble the crib and put it in the attic...even if Nolan was ready to upgrade to a big boy bed. Since he spends the majority of his sleeping time snuggled between Adam and I in our bed, kicking off our covers, smashing his face into mine while jabbing Adam in the side, we naively thought we could trick him into staying in his own bed...in his own room, if we upgraded his mattress to one even better than ours.

Purchase of said bed was not without drama. After spending the morning on the Internet researching acceptable children's beds, Adam headed to Slumberland with coupon in hand to make a purchase. However, once the bed was home, it was clear the children's mattress everyone buys was average at best.

After lunch, Adam exchanged the bed for a high quality severely discounted model at the outlet store. The new bed was highly superior to the first, but also over twice as thick...as thick as the safety rail we intended to utilize to ensure Nolan remains in the bed. When placed on the metal bed frame and box spring, the bed was nearly as high as Collin's top bunk...downright unsafe for a little person 20 months, 18 days old. So we had to improvise. We wedged the box spring back into the attic and Adam cut pieces of leftover plywood from the garage, creating an improved platform for the new mattress. The bed is still higher than we would like...and we have to wedge the plastic lid from the toy box between the safety rail and mattress to ensure Nolan doesn't fall out of bed...but Nolan seems enamoured. We just hope he likes it enough to stay put...in his own bed...for the entire night.
