I would imagine that previous generations reverted to their native languages when attempting to keep information from their young children. Since we are not bilingual, Adam and I have to resort to spelling to discuss "sensitive" topics.
Collin finds these discussions incredible frustrating and unnecessary, so much so he recently began spelling to us. When he's particularly irritated by our spelling tirades, he will turn to us with wrinkled brow and say, "B...H...R...O...N!!! Do you know what that spells?"
Nope, Collin...I don't know what that spells...but we get the picture. Unfortunately, I don't think the letters will disappear from our conversations as long as you can't spell!
