Hudson

We trekked out to Hudson, WI to spend the day with the Andersons. Now that we each have three kids and challenging schedules, the frequency of our visits has diminished.

It took the kids, Betsy, Collin, Mitchell, Aaron and Nate, the better part of the day to warm up to each other...but after they did, we were able to enjoy some adult conversation, reflecting on religion, spirituality, politics, and pressing social current events. These conversations are food for the soul. It is refreshing to be in the presence of intelligent, socially conscientious people, who thoughtfully engage each other on decisive issues. As a businessman, a scientist, a lawyer and a doctor, we bring different perspectives to the table. While we don't always agree, we thoughtfully engage each other...confirming some and challenging other currently held beliefs and positions.

Ellen told me recently that we have to be cautious of "collective thought", which is basically the idea that due to advances in information technology, we continually hear the same news, the same issues. People can easily obtain information on ideas that confirm their positions. The challenge is to get outside of collective thought...to think differently...to have fresh ideas...to explore new possibilities.

What a blessing to be able to do this with outstanding friends.
