Squirrel Catchers

There's a new contraption in our front yard...

Adam and the boys constructed a squirrel catcher (ie...an old camp milk crate propped up by a stick, tied to a string that is threaded through the bay window by the kitchen table). This device is conveniently located under the Yankee Flipper bird feeder Laura gave us for Christmas a couple years ago, so bait is readily available.

Instead of eating, the boys are now focused on trapping squirrels...or bunnies...or the pair of wood ducks that annually reside in our yard...or any other wildlife that happens to wander under the crate for a quick meal. Just what we needed...more distractions at meal time.

They have managed to capture a few unsuspecting squirrels...and all of them have eventually learned how to escape without intervention. Since Collin has a soft spot in his heart for all things living...I don't think I have to worry that they will be well cared for and inevitably released.

Now we just have to figure out a way to capture the chipmunk that has made his home under our front steps. He's too wily to fall for the milk crate trap...but Adam has made it his personal mission to get him relocated to the Minnesota River before he damages our house.

Who needs real pets when wildlife will do?
